Israel’s Contributions to the World of Engineering

By Jordan Frankel, Queen’s University, Hasbara Fellow

Over the years, Israel has been one of the world’s leading countries in technology and innovation. From Waze, the navigation app, to the Pillcam, the first Capsule endoscopy that can record images of the digestive tract, Israel has been on the forefront of developing solutions to various issues. Recently, Israel has been making huge strides in the field of engineering.  Two companies, Intel-Israel and Supersonas, are using machine learning to develop an AI that gives professional advice to young women starting their careers. Over 3,500 Israeli women have given tips and advice to this AI platform which they have learnt over the course of their careers. The goal is that young women starting out will be able to access this platform and use this advice to become successful in their respective fields.

At Tel Aviv University, the students have developed a nanosatellite whose data could help make space safer for astronauts. The satellite is designed to monitor the high energy radiation particles being emitted by the sun. Using the data collected, the team could be able to create protective gear for astronauts and their equipment so that the damage received from the emitted particles in space is reduced.

As well, one of Israel’s startups REE Automotive is opening a location in the UK. REE Automotive develops electric vehicle platforms which are the basis for developing autonomous electric vehicles that are adaptable with many different industrial demands. With a new REE Automotive location, it is expected to create a lot of jobs for Brits in the area as well as offer numerous opportunities for automotive companies.

In terms of software engineering, Israel has also developed Instagram Lite. Instagram Lite is a less intensive version of Instagram that was designed to be used by those in rural communities who do not have access to a large bandwidth of data. The app is 15 times smaller than Instagram and can still provide a high quality experience. The advances in the various fields of engineering that Israelis have made are remarkable and it will be fascinating to see what they do next.
